A 2 year old Standardbred colt developed a fever (105 F) on February 29, 2024. He developed mild ataxia and bladder paralysis and was admitted to a referral hospital on March 3, 2024. On March 4, equine herpes virus 1 (EHV-1) was confirmed from a nasal swab using PCR. The colt is recovering.

EHV-1 is immediately notifiable in Ontario and a veterinarian is working with those involved to implement biosecurity measures.
